Santorini Photoshoot on a Cruise Day: Timing Guide
How to fit a photoshoot into a Santorini cruise stop: tender times, the cable car queue, one- and two-hour routes from Fira, and the all-aboard margin.

Cruise passengers book more sessions with us than anyone else, and almost all of them worry about the same thing: the clock. A Santorini stop is usually eight to ten hours on paper and six or seven on the ground once tenders and queues are counted. Here is how we fit a photoshoot into it, from the moment the tender lands.
How a cruise stop works in Santorini
Ships anchor in the caldera off Fira. Tenders run to the old port at the bottom of the cliff; from there the cable car, 588 steps on foot, or the donkey path lead up to Fira. On a day with two or three ships the tender line takes thirty to forty minutes and the cable car queue can reach an hour in the afternoon, mostly on the way back down. Some ships use Athinios, the ferry port, with buses up to Fira; that adds twenty minutes each way.
Since 2025 Greece charges a cruise passenger levy for Santorini in the peak season; it is collected through the ship, not by you on the island.
Where we meet
At the top of the cable car in Fira, two minutes from the caldera path. You message us when the tender leaves the ship; Alexandros is at the top before you are. No taxis, no hotel pickups, no time lost looking for each other.
Routes by the time you have
| Time on the island | Route | Photos |
|---|---|---|
| One hour (ship leaves by 15:00) | Fira caldera path, the Three Bells, a rooftop above the port, Firostefani viewpoint | 60 or more |
| Two hours | Fira first, then ten minutes by car to Imerovigli for the chapel terrace below Skaros Rock, back to the cable car | 110 or more |
| Two hours with a late ship (all-aboard after 19:00) | Fira, Imerovigli, and Oia from the quiet side at the end, drive back to the cable car | 110 or more |
| Family on a cruise day | Fira caldera path only, morning, no steps beyond the cable car | 60 or more |
Oia is the question every cruise couple asks. It is forty minutes from the cable car by car in summer traffic and the same back, so with a 17:00 or 18:00 all-aboard it is a gamble we do not take. With a late ship, yes; we plan it last so the light is best and the lanes are emptying.
Light on a cruise day
Cruise sessions happen between about 10:00 and 17:00, which is not golden hour. The caldera path still works: the morning light is clean and side-on, the white walls bounce it back onto faces, and rooftops above the port have shade. We avoid the glare of midday squares, keep you in open shade when the sun is overhead, and save the open caldera frames for the start and the end of the session.
Timing it backwards
Give us two numbers: the ship's name and the all-aboard time. We work backwards from the last tender, add a margin for the cable car queue, and set the start of the session so you are at the top of the cable car with time to spare. On busy days we walk down the steps instead of queuing; it takes twenty minutes and it is downhill.
What to bring
Flat shoes for the steps, a hat and water for the sun, a light outfit in colors that work against white walls (see the what to wear guide), and your ship card. Leave the big bag on board; the path is narrow.
Delivery
Galleries arrive within a week, which means after your cruise. If you want them on board, the express add-on (€90) delivers within 48 hours, usually while the ship is still in Greek waters.
Prices for a cruise day
The one-hour Golden Hour Session is €349 with 60 or more photos and works at any hour, name aside. Two hours with Imerovigli is the Signature Session at €499, and the Private Photo Tour at €499 covers the same two hours with Alexandros driving between villages. No payment online; we confirm within 24 hours, a 30 % deposit secures the date, and tender delays never cost you the session.
A cruise-day session, hour by hour
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 07:30 | Ship anchors off Fira. You message us the tender you plan to take. |
| 08:30 | First tenders land; the cable car queue is still short. You ride up. |
| 08:55 | Alexandros meets you at the top of the cable car. |
| 09:00 | Caldera path toward Firostefani: rooftops, the Three Bells, the view over the port with your ship in it. |
| 09:45 | Car to Imerovigli, ten minutes. |
| 10:00 | Chapel terrace below Skaros Rock, the cliff path. |
| 10:45 | Back at the cable car with a 30-minute margin before the queue grows. |
Later tenders push everything back; the structure stays the same. A one-hour session cuts the Imerovigli part.
Which ships and which days
Days with one ship in the caldera are calm; days with three are not. The cable car queue, the tavernas and the caldera path all fill by late morning on a three-ship day. We check the port schedule when you book and tell you whether the morning or the early afternoon is quieter for your date. If your ship is the only one, almost any hour works.
Sunset on a cruise day
Some ships stay until 21:00 or overnight. Then the session can run at golden hour like any other: Fira rooftops at 19:30, or Imerovigli and Oia with the car, and back to the cable car in the blue hour. The queue going down after sunset is the longest of the day; we walk the 588 steps down instead, twenty minutes, downhill, with the lights of the port below.
If the tender is late
It happens, especially in wind. Your session simply starts when you arrive; we do not shorten it unless your all-aboard forces us to, and we never charge for a delay that is not yours. If a tender is cancelled altogether, the free reschedule applies, which for a cruise means a refund of the deposit if you cannot return.
Families and groups from a ship
The caldera path has steps and narrow sections; strollers manage, wheelchairs do not. For families with small children we stay on the Fira rooftops near the cable car and keep the walk under 300 meters. Groups of friends up to four book one session; larger groups get a quote and a second photographer if needed.
Your time budget, from tender to first photo
| Step | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Tender from the ship | The time depends on where your ship anchors and how many ships are in port. Message us when your tender leaves. |
| Old port to Fira | Cable car, or 588 steps on foot. The queue for the cable car peaks when several ships tender at once. Going up on foot is slow and hot in summer; walking down takes about twenty minutes. |
| Cable car top to the caldera path | Two minutes on foot. Alexandros is at the station when you arrive. |
| The session | One hour for Fira and the Three Bells, two hours with Imerovigli, ten minutes by car each way. |
| Back to the last tender | We end the route at the cable car and leave a margin for the queue. |
Booking checklist for cruise passengers
- The ship's name, the date, and the arrival and all-aboard times from your itinerary. Check whether your ship keeps ship time or local time; they are not always the same.
- A phone that works off the ship, by roaming or a local eSIM, with our WhatsApp number saved. Ship Wi-Fi is enough to book in advance, less reliable for messaging on the day.
- Shoes for steps and cobbles, a hat for the midday sun, and one outfit; there is no time for a change.
- Payment: nothing today, a 30 % deposit after we confirm, the balance in cash or by card on the day.
- If the ship is delayed or the tender is late, the free time or date change covers you.
What a cruise day looks like in the gallery
Daylight on the caldera path is harder than golden hour, so we work the shaded sides of the alleys, the white walls that bounce light back onto faces, and the rooftops where the town is behind you and the caldera in front. You receive 60 or more edited photos for one hour or 110 or more for two, delivered within a week, so the gallery is waiting at your next port or at home.
Questions cruise passengers ask
Do we need euros? Only for the balance on the day, which can be paid by card. The deposit is paid before the cruise by transfer or payment link.
Can we book from the ship? Yes. WhatsApp works on ship Wi-Fi; we confirm within 24 hours and often within the hour during the season.
Is the cable car included? No; tickets are bought at the station. The walk down is free and takes twenty minutes.
Can you meet us at Athinios instead? Yes, by arrangement; it adds about twenty minutes of driving each way, and we plan the session in Fira or Imerovigli from there.
