Best Time for Photos in Santorini: Hours and Months
The best time for photos in Santorini is the hour before sunset, April to October. Month-by-month light, sunset and sunrise times, crowds and weather.

The best time for photos in Santorini is the last hour before sunset, on almost any day between April and October. The caldera faces west, so the setting sun lights the white villages from the front, warm and low, and that is the light every famous Santorini photo was taken in. Sunrise is the alternative for empty streets. Everything else, the month, the day of the week, the village, is secondary to those two windows.
Having photographed on the island through every season since 2014, here is how I decide the hour and the month for a session, with the numbers.
Golden hour wins, every month
Golden hour starts roughly 70 minutes before sunset and ends about 10 minutes after it, when the sky goes blue and even. In that window the sun is low enough to light faces without squinting, the white walls turn cream and gold, and the sea goes from steel to deep blue. Midday light does the opposite: it comes from above, puts shadows under eyes and turns the villages into a bright white glare.
A one-hour session therefore starts about 70 minutes before sunset. A two-hour session starts earlier in a village that works in flat light, such as the shaded alleys of Pyrgos or the open terraces of Imerovigli, and finishes at the view.
Alexandros's note: I never book a couple session for 15:00 in July, even when the schedule is free. The photos would look like a different, worse island.
Sunset and sunrise times by month
Sunset times for Santorini, local time, start and end of each month. The booking calendar shows the exact times for your date.
| Month | Sunset, start of month | Sunset, end of month | Sunrise, mid-month | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April | 19:45 | 20:05 | 06:45 | Clocks already on summer time; cool evenings |
| May | 20:05 | 20:25 | 06:15 | Long evenings, few people |
| June | 20:25 | 20:35 | 06:05 | Latest sunsets of the year |
| July | 20:35 | 20:20 | 06:15 | Hot afternoons, busy villages |
| August | 20:20 | 19:50 | 06:35 | Peak crowds, strong evening wind some days |
| September | 19:50 | 19:10 | 07:00 | Richer, lower light |
| October | 19:10 | 18:20 | 07:25 | Clocks go back in the last week |
| November to March | 17:25 to 18:30 | 07:00 to 07:40 | Quiet island, moody light |
The numbers move by a minute or two from year to year; they are good enough to plan a trip, and the calendar on the booking page does the precise version.
Sunrise or sunset
Sunset gives the glow and the famous view; sunrise gives the island to yourself.
| Aspect | Sunrise session | Sunset session |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Soft, cool, from the east; the caldera side stays in shadow for the first hour | Warm, from the west, straight onto the villages and faces |
| Crowds | Oia is empty until about 08:30 | Oia's main path is full from 18:30 in summer |
| Best village | Oia alleys, the domes, the castle steps | Imerovigli terraces, Fira rooftops, Oia from the quiet side |
| Who books it | Families, early risers, anyone who hates crowds | Most couples and all proposals |
| Start time (July) | 06:30 | 19:20 |
Alexandros's note: at sunrise I shoot Oia with the sea behind you only after 07:30, when the sun clears the hill behind Fira and lights the caldera. Before that the alleys are the picture, not the view.
Month by month
April and May
My favorite months to photograph. The island is open but not full, the light is soft, and temperatures sit around 18 to 24 degrees, comfortable for walking and for wearing what you planned. Oia's streets at golden hour are quiet enough for clean frames without strangers behind you, and sunset at 20:00 gives a relaxed evening. Best for proposals, honeymoons and anniversaries; the sea is still cold for swimming.
June, July and August
The most dramatic light and the most people. Sunsets at 20:20 to 20:35 stretch golden hour into the evening, which is lovely; afternoons at 30 to 35 degrees are not. Oia at sunset can hold thousands of people in a few streets, so in peak season we start sessions around 18:30 in Imerovigli or Fira, shoot through golden hour and finish in the blue hour, and we use terraces and side paths in Oia where you would not know another person was nearby. Book four to eight weeks ahead; sunset slots fill first.
September and early October
My top recommendation. The crowds thin out after the first week of September, the sea is at its warmest, and the sun sits lower, so the light takes on a deeper, amber quality against the white and blue. Sunset moves from 19:50 to 19:10 through September and to 18:20 by the end of October. Evenings cool to a comfortable 22 degrees. Some restaurants start closing in late October, but the villages, the light and the caldera are all still there with far fewer people in front of them.
November to March
A different island: quiet, raw and surprisingly beautiful. Most tourist infrastructure closes, the ferries run less often, and the light is low and moody all day with longer shadows. Expect 12 to 18 degrees and the occasional rainy day, with the free reschedule covering the rain. For couples who want something unlike the summer postcard, winter sessions produce the most atmospheric images of the year, and you will have the castle in Oia entirely to yourselves.
Best time of day, in one table
| Time | Light | Crowds | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:30 to 08:30 | Soft, cool, side light | None | Oia walkthroughs, families with small children |
| 08:30 to 11:00 | Brightening, still kind on faces in shade | Growing | Fira caldera path, Imerovigli blue dome |
| 11:00 to 16:00 | Hard, overhead | Full | Avoid for portraits; shaded alleys in Pyrgos only |
| 16:00 to golden hour | Warming, still high | Full in Oia | Start of two- and three-hour sessions, away from the viewpoints |
| Golden hour (last 70 min) | The best light of the day | Full at the castle, light elsewhere | Everything, from the terraces above the crowd |
| Blue hour (10 to 25 min after sunset) | Even, deep blue, town lights on | Dispersing | Caldera views, village frames, the last ten photos of a session |
Weather, wind and plan B
Santorini has about 300 sunny days a year; rain between May and October is rare. Wind is the real variable. The north wind (the meltemi) blows hardest in July and August, mostly in the afternoon, and it is strongest on the caldera edge in Oia and on Skaros Rock. On a windy day we move to a sheltered village side, start later, or shoot at sunrise when the air is usually still. Dresses that move in the wind are part of the Santorini look; hair that whips across the face is not, so bring a clip.
If the forecast turns, we move the session at no cost, decided together the day before.
How to use this when booking
Pick the month first, the hour second, the village third. Then open the booking page: the calendar shows sunrise, golden hour and sunset for the date you pick, and the time preference tells Alexandros where to start. If your dates are fixed and fall in August, book early and ask for Imerovigli; if they are flexible, aim for the second half of September.
Which way each village faces
Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira all sit on the western rim of the caldera and face the sunset, which is why the whole island gathers on that edge every evening and why nearly every session happens there. The east coast beaches at Kamari and Perissa face the sunrise instead, with open sea in front and no caldera, so they rarely feature in our galleries. Within the western villages the details differ: the windmills of Oia are backlit at sunset, the blue dome of the Anastasi church in Imerovigli is best from 08:00 to 10:00 or at the very end of the day, and the Fira caldera path and rooftops take the morning light well.
Blue hour
Ten to twenty-five minutes after sunset the sky turns an even, deep blue and the village lights come on. The crowds disperse, the light is soft on faces, and the last ten frames of a session often come from these minutes on the Imerovigli cliff path or a Fira rooftop. A one-hour session timed to end at sunset catches the gold; two- and three-hour sessions naturally run into the blue.
Cruise and ferry days
Cruise ships anchor off Fira and passengers tender to the old port, so the clock runs on the ship's all-aboard time rather than on sunset. One hour covers the Fira caldera path and the Three Bells in daylight; two hours add Imerovigli. If your ship stays past 19:00, the session can run at golden hour like any other. Ferry arrivals at Athinios port are simpler: tell us the arrival time and we plan a sunset session the same day or a sunrise session the next morning. Full details are in the cruise-day guide linked below.
