What to Wear for Your Santorini Photo Session

By Alexandros Sirigos  ·  January 2026  ·  5 min read

I'm asked about outfits in almost every enquiry. It makes sense — you'll be looking at these photos for decades, and the right clothing can elevate a good photo into a truly timeless one.

Here's what I've learned from photographing couples in Santorini every week for over twelve years.

Colours That Work Beautifully in Santorini

Santorini's visual palette is very specific: brilliant white architecture, deep blue domes, terracotta rooftops, volcanic black rock, and the turquoise-to-navy Aegean. Your outfit should complement this, not compete with it.

The Best Choices

What to Avoid

How to Coordinate as a Couple

The goal is harmony, not uniformity. Choose a colour family and let each person express it in their own way. Some combinations that always work:

If you're unsure, send me a photo of your planned outfits before the session — I'm happy to give feedback.

Fabrics & Practical Considerations

For women

Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully in Santorini's gentle breeze — lightweight linen, chiffon, and silk all move naturally and look stunning in motion. A midi or maxi length dress gives you flexibility on cobblestone streets and steps.

Comfort matters. You'll be walking, standing, and sometimes climbing steps. Wedge sandals are more practical than stilettos on the village paths. Flat sandals photograph just as elegantly and are far more comfortable over two hours.

For men

Linen is your best friend in Santorini. A linen shirt (untucked or lightly tucked) with well-fitted trousers looks relaxed and refined. Avoid overly casual options — a plain T-shirt rarely elevates a photo the way a collared shirt does. Light colours work beautifully; navy, white, and stone are always right.

Layers

Even in summer, Santorini has a breeze in the evenings. A light jacket or wrap can be useful for the walk to the location, then removed for the session itself.

Hair & Accessories

Because of the wind — which is nearly constant on the caldera — hair that's worn down will move. This is often beautiful in photos; some of my favourite images feature windswept hair. If this concerns you, a loose updo or braid stays in place more reliably.

For jewellery: keep it simple. Statement earrings work well. Avoid anything that clanks or catches the light in a distracting way. Your engagement ring, of course, will be featured prominently — keep the surrounding jewellery understated so it stays the focus.

The One Thing That Matters Most

Wear something you feel genuinely good in. Confidence in your appearance comes through in every photo. An outfit you feel slightly uncomfortable in — too tight, too formal, not quite you — shows. An outfit you love and feel at home in produces photos that feel authentic and alive.

The most stunning photos I've taken have been of couples in simple, well-chosen clothes that suited them — not the most elaborate outfits, but the most them ones.
