Couple seen from above on the chapel terrace with Skaros Rock and the caldera, Santorini

Santorini Photo Spots

Every viewpoint we use, ranked by light and crowd level, with meeting points and the hour that works.

Skaros Rock chapel terrace, golden hour

The best photo spots in Santorini are on the caldera edge, facing west: the blue domes, the castle and the windmills of Oia; Skaros Rock and the chapel terraces of Imerovigli; the caldera path and the Three Bells of Fira. Beyond the three villages, Akrotiri lighthouse, the white cliffs of Vlychada and the alleys of Pyrgos give frames without a crowd.

Below, each spot has the hour that works, a crowd level by time of day and a meeting point. We photographed every one of them; the photos on this page are from real sessions. Pick a village and the booking calendar shows the sunset time for your date.

Rule of thumb

  • Oia: sunrise, or a terrace above the crowd before sunset
  • Imerovigli: golden hour, almost nobody
  • Fira: mornings, and cruise days
  • South: Akrotiri and Vlychada for empty frames

The three caldera villages

Family of three in front of the blue dome of Oia framed by pink bougainvillea Oia

The postcard: blue domes, the castle ruins, the windmills and the long walk down to Ammoudi. It is also the busiest village on the island from 17:00 until dark.

Sunrise to 09:00 for empty alleys; 60 to 30 minutes before sunset for the domes and the castle, but from the terraces above the crowd, not inside it.

The white cross of the Agios Georgios chapel below Skaros Rock, backlit by the low sun Imerovigli

The highest village on the caldera and the quietest of the three. Skaros Rock, the chapel terraces and the cliff path toward Firostefani give the widest views with almost nobody in the frame.

Golden hour, 70 to 10 minutes before sunset, on the chapel terrace below Skaros; sunrise for the blue-domed Anastasi church.

Surprise proposal on a private terrace in Fira at sunset, caldera and cruise ship below Fira and Firostefani

The capital: the caldera path, the Three Bells, white hotels stacked on the cliff and the old port below. Ten minutes from the cable car, which makes it the right village for cruise days and short stays.

Morning for the caldera path and rooftops; sunset from a private terrace rather than the main walkway.

Questions about the spots

All 40 questions
What are the best places for photos in Santorini?

The castle, windmills and blue domes of Oia; Skaros Rock and the chapel terraces of Imerovigli; the caldera path and Three Bells in Fira; Akrotiri lighthouse at sunset; Vlychada's sculpted cliffs; Pyrgos and Megalochori for quiet alleys. Our locations guide ranks them by hour and crowd level.

Where are the blue domes and how many are there?

The three famous domes stand in Oia below the main walkway, and Oia has about a dozen more. Imerovigli and Firostefani have their own blue-domed churches with far fewer people. We know the terraces that look straight at them.

Oia or Imerovigli?

Oia for the famous postcard, Imerovigli for space. Oia has the domes, the windmills and the castle, and in summer it also has the crowds. Imerovigli has Skaros Rock, the chapel terraces and the widest caldera view, with almost nobody in your frame.

Are there photography rules or permits in Oia?

Oia asks visitors and photographers to keep the pathways clear and to respect residents and church property. Some church courtyards are private and may be closed to shoots or ask for a small contribution. We follow the rules on the day, keep a low profile and never block a path for a photo.
