5 Best Spots for a Proposal in Santorini

By Alexandros Sirigos  ·  April 2026  ·  6 min read

After 12 years photographing proposals across every corner of Santorini, I've seen what works and what doesn't. The location matters more than almost anything else — the right spot makes the moment feel cinematic, timeless, and completely yours.

Here are the five locations I recommend most often to couples planning a proposal on the island, and exactly what makes each one special.

1. Oia Castle (Kastro) — The Iconic Choice

There's a reason Oia appears on every list of the world's most romantic places. The ruined Byzantine castle at the northern tip of the village offers an unobstructed 270-degree view of the caldera, the volcanic islands, and the famous Santorini sunset. When the sky turns amber and the Aegean glows beneath you, there is nowhere on earth quite like it.

Best time: 30–45 minutes before official sunset. The light is warm and directional — it sculpts faces beautifully and turns the white walls into gold.
Hidden photographer tip: I position behind the stone walls to the north, staying completely out of your sightline until the moment happens.

One thing to know: The castle fills with tourists at peak season. We schedule sessions to arrive when the crowds thin — usually just after the sun dips below the horizon, when most visitors leave but the light remains extraordinary for another 15–20 minutes.

2. Skaros Rock, Imerovigli — The Hidden Gem

Skaros Rock is Santorini's best-kept secret for proposals. A short trail from Imerovigli leads to a dramatic promontory jutting over the caldera — you feel genuinely suspended above the sea. Unlike Oia, you're almost always alone here.

Best time: Late afternoon, two hours before sunset. The light is soft and the caldera takes on a deep navy blue.
Why I love it for proposals: The isolation means the moment belongs entirely to you. No crowds, no noise — just the wind, the sea, and the most important question of your lives.

The hike takes about 20 minutes each way and is moderately easy. Wear comfortable shoes. The reward is absolute.

3. Fira Caldera Pathway — Urban Romance

The paved pathway running along the caldera edge from Fira to Firostefani is one of Santorini's most beautiful walks, lined with whitewashed churches, blue domes, and jaw-dropping views at every turn. It's more accessible than Skaros, and the variety of backdrops means we can move freely during the session.

Best time: Early morning (7–9am) for an empty pathway with soft golden light, or golden hour for the warm sunset tones.
Perfect for: Couples who want to walk and explore rather than stand in one fixed spot. The proposal can happen at whichever viewpoint feels right in the moment.

4. Akrotiri Lighthouse — Dramatic & Windswept

At the southern tip of the island, the Akrotiri lighthouse sits on a clifftop above a sheer drop into the Aegean. The views stretch in every direction — no buildings, no development, just volcanic rock, sea, and sky. It feels like the edge of the world.

Best time: Sunset, when the lighthouse itself becomes a stunning element in the frame.
Best for: Adventurous couples who want something different. It's a 10-minute drive from Fira, quiet, and strikingly beautiful in a raw, elemental way.

5. Private Villa Terrace — The Most Intimate Option

Many of Santorini's caldera-facing villas have private terraces with views that rival any public viewpoint. If you're staying at one of the island's luxury properties, proposing on your own terrace offers complete privacy, no logistics, and a deeply personal backdrop.

How it works: I arrive before you do, positioning discreetly inside or to the side of the terrace. Everything is coordinated without your partner knowing. When the moment happens, I'm invisible — the photos tell the whole story.
Best time: Sunset, or just after — the caldera lights up beautifully as the sky darkens.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

When to book

For peak season (June–September), book your photographer 4–8 weeks in advance. The best sunset slots fill quickly. For spring and autumn sessions, 2–3 weeks is usually fine.

What if she says yes? (She will.)

After the proposal, we do a short couples portrait session — usually 20–30 minutes — to capture the two of you together with your ring, the view, and the feeling of the moment still fresh. These often become some of the most treasured photos from the whole trip.
